Day 12 Adventure | Reducing Your Exposure to Chemicals in Beauty Products
According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), 40 percent of women usually buy products free of parabens, pthalates and sulphates. Women are generally wanting cleaner products and polls have confirmed the preference for products that are “natural” or “organic.” This is great! But are these products actually safer? Unfortunately, marketing claims are largely unregulated and companies have a tendency to throw around these beauty buzz words however they please.
Keep in mind that “natural” doesn’t necessarily mean “safe.” Because the term legally means nothing, a product could be labelled “natural” but only contain one or two naturally sourced ingredients. It’s not unlikely that the rest of the product is saturated with harmful chemicals. It can also be misleading as some botanicals contain highly toxic components and manufacturers use substances derived from them in their “natural” products.
